Having blogged before about small house plans, I couldn’t resist speaking about the Tumbleweed Tiny House company. The company builds very small portable homes from 65 to 172 square feet, mainly for use on vacation or as a secondary space. However, they also sell small house plans for their cottage homes, which range in size from 260 to 880 square feet. The Whibdey home is a fine example of their architectural design and one that merits further attention.

The Whibdey can be modified as a one bedroom or two bedroom home. The one bedroom home has 461 square feet, while the two bedroom has 557 square feet. However, these figures do not include the sizable loft area, which adds additional space for use as an extra bedroom, office or storage room. While the home is likely very small for a family, it is a great retirement or starter home option.

The Whibdey, A Small House Plan That Gets It RightThe Whibdey is a single level ranch-style home. Older people who have trouble maneuvering up and down the stairs can appreciate Whidbey’s single story design. So too can moms tired of lugging loads of laundry up and down the stairs. The architectural design of the home is simple but effective. The front bedroom, lined with numerous windows, overlooks the front porch. Behind the front bedroom is the great room, and can either be left open to reveal two loft areas on either side, or closed off to create a loft that stretches the entire length of the home. The kitchen, bathroom and laundry area are located behind the great room. They can add the optional second bedroom behind the kitchen.

As a retirement home, or even a starter home, you simply cannot beat the Whidbey’s price. The one bedroom plan only costs $43 thousand to build – plus $7 thousand for the optional second bedroom. As small house plans go, a buyer will be hard pressed to find a design as smart, comfortable, and affordable as the Whibdey.
